Peter McKenzie

Peter McKenzie is chief photographer, SADC region for the Pan African press agency Panapress.

'Footsak' On the Ball 2010 is his most recent project and entailed a journey across 5 African countries with artists doung anwar jahangeer and Guy-Andre Largesse. The journey was reflected in a 7 projection video installation at the Durban Art Gallery. Directed the documentary film ‘What Kind?' about his home township of Wentworth, Durban.

Most recent photographic exhibition ‘Local Racism, Global Apartheid: South Africa as a Paradigm', Barcelona, Spain and ‘Here and There' a traveling exhibition on migration in the SADC region.

Works with several NGOs, international publications, has recently photo edited the photographic book ‘District 6 Revisited'.

Teaches at the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism, curriculum consultant, teacher and mentor at the Market Photo Workshop, where he is a member of the Advisory Council.Works in Lagos, Nigeria with the World Press Foundation. Serves on the board of the Market Theatre Foundation. Alumni of the Poynter Institute in Florida U.S.A.


Peter is also the new member of Durban based multi disciplinary art collective Dala. He has recently co-founded the Durban Center for Photography at the kwaZulu Natal Society for the Arts where he also serves as Council President. The DCP hosts regular workshops, photography student projects and exhibitions both locally and internationally. He most recently exhibited in the ‘Rise and Fall of Apartheid’ at the International Center for Photography, New York, Germany and Sweden in 2013/14. Three shows in France during a residence at the French/SA seasons. Artist and co-curator of the ‘Homing’ exhibition at the KZNSA. He has lectured at Durban University of Technology, Tswane University of Technology, Wits University, the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism and the Market Photo Workshop and facilitated photography workshops internationally. He is council member for the Market Theatre Foundation and Advisory Board Member at the Market Photo Workshop. Photographer, curator and film-maker on pan African project ‘Footsak’ which was installed at DAG in June 2010. McK has exhibited extensively internationally and his writings on photography published widely.

His present pre-occupation in Durban is the re-imaging of urban space and a study of the history of African photography.

 

He presently lives and works between Marseilles, France and Durban, South Africa.
