Art specialist, Alastair Meredith (b.1984, JHB) has a keen interest in twentieth-century South African painting. It is his on-going research into the life and work of the Cape Town-born painter Jan Juta, also an accomplished muralist and designer who illustrated D.H. Lawrence’s Sea and Sardinia (1921), that first brought Alistair to the attention of Strauss & Co’s late director, Stephan Welz, who shortly afterwards offered him a job.
After completing his Bachelor of Arts (Art History and English Literature) at the University of Edinburgh, Alastair attended Cambridge University where he completed his Master’s degree. His PhD thesis, which focused on Jan Juta, has also recently been accepted at the same institution. To this end, Alistair has presented various papers on Juta and the European influence on his painting at art history symposia and conferences at Cambridge University and Columbia University. Alastair has also taught undergraduate students, focussing primarily on British painting. Since joining Strauss & Co, his professional interests have grown to include the curatorial aspect of displaying artworks and the way this display reflects the development of South African art history.
Alastair joined Strauss & Co as an Art Specialist in 2014. He works out of the Johannesburg office. He is qualified to address any enquiries related to Watercolours, Drawings, Prints, Sculpture and South African and British Paintings on behalf of Strauss & Co.
