 RECONNECT 18th March – 18th May

Showcase Gallery, Dubai, in partnership with the KZNSA Gallery (as part of Dubai Art Week).

Art Week, the umbrella initiative that includes Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai, Sikka, showcases the broad programme of cultural events taking place across the UAE and beyond in March 2013. Art Week positions the Gulf – regionally and internationally – as a place of artistic production and home to numerous cultural centres. From expansive new museum projects in Doha to the thriving Dubai gallery scene, from one-off happenings, projects and installations to festivals and fairs, Art Week serves to demonstrate the dynamism and progressive spirit at large throughout the Gulf’s cultural scene.

Art Week actively encourages collaborations with art organisations, colleges, commercial galleries and non-commercial spaces, and helps to promote the UAE as the centre of the knowledge economy in the region, and as a home for the creative industries.

In June 2011 Hendrik Stroebel presented his solo exhibition ‘RECOLLECT’ at the KZNSA Gallery, South Africa.  The exhibition was composed of large and small scale works that combined ceramic, carved wood, bronze, and what is probably one of the most outstanding embroidery collections produced by a contemporary visual artist in recent years. His ‘free-style’ use of this labour intensive medium took this art form to a new level. Stroebel’s work has a painterly quality where the coloured thread evokes the freshness and immediacy of the painted mark. The content of the work explored the pattern and texture of the Arab and Islamic world. He portrayed the architecture, ancient history and people that so fascinated him on his travels. The artists abiding interest in antiquity is literally woven into the images.
Following an extraordinary journey that led KZNSA Gallery Curator, Bren Brophy to the Middle East, Hendrik opened ‘RECONNECT’ in Durban in 2012 as a preview to his solo exhibition which premiers in March 2013 at the Showcase Gallery in Dubai, this in partnership with the KZNSA Gallery.
‘RECONNECT’ opened on the occasion of ‘Art Dubai’ - one of the world’s largest contemporary Art Fairs in a region buoyant with the elation associated with the ‘Arab Spring’. Stroebel’s lifelong journey is quite literally returning ‘home’ to the well spring of the artist’s inspiration. The ‘RECOLLECT’ catalogue preamble titled ‘Bigger is not always better (a brief history of time in 30 seconds)’ referred to the notion that taking time to create great beauty becomes subversive and to the remarkable sense of providence that led the artist and exhibition curator to the incubation of relationships that will see this Durban artist on a global stage.
