This “breaking down” of the layers of paint allows for further random possibilities to occur. It also often reveals the underlying relationship between the drawing and the painting. Using transparent glazes further exposes and enhances these releationships. This technique of progressively revealing and exposing preceding layers speaks of the memories we all lay down, and the often seemingly randomness of life. Each action is built upon the preceding one.
Ironically it is this very tangible method of working that inspires the desire to evoke and capture memories, dreams and the ambiance of times past. Through attempting to harness such transient states, Oliver’s work explores the dialogue between her conscious mind and intuitive self. The artist takes up the challenge to evoke an emotional response from the viewer, and in this way she suggests a presence rather than its straightforward portrayal.
Jane Oliver studied art at the Technical College, Zimbabwe, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She has participated in a number of group exhibitions, and is the winner of Start: The Nivea Art Award in 2009.
