OPENING | Sand Mandala Creation | Tuesday, 4th November | 10h30
Date
04/11/2025
As part of the international celebrations for the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday, four Tibetan Buddhist monks will be visiting South Africa, hosted by the Tibet Society of South Africa. The monks will be constructing an intricate sand mandala which is a symbolic art-form unique to Tibetan Buddhism. These works of spiritual art are created to encourage healing and peace for those creating and viewing it.
This will be the third time the KZNSA Gallery has hosted this extraordinary event where you can witness the gradual creation of something rarely seen in South Africa.
After six days of meticulously placing coloured sand, grain by grain, to create a magical 3-dimensional image, the monks will sweep up the sand and disperse the sand in the sea in order to spread healing and peace throughout the world, also emphasising the transitory nature of all things in the universe. You are invited to sit, meditate and reflect whilst the monks are busy creating their masterpiece.
Free entry – the creation of the mandala will be open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, during normal gallery operating hours.
