KZNSA GALLERY 2027: CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

Date

14/10/2026

KZNSA Gallery in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, seeks proposals for exhibitions for its 2027 exhibition calendar. Applications close on 14 October 2026 at 23:59. All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their proposal by 30 November 2026.

What should be seen in 2027?

KZNSA Gallery is looking ahead to its 2027 exhibition programme and is inviting artists, curators and creative practitioners to propose exhibitions that bring compelling ideas, new perspectives and ambitious practices into the gallery.

We are interested in proposals that challenge, question, provoke, experiment and engage. Whether you are developing a new body of work, bringing together artists around a critical idea, or proposing an exhibition that opens up an unexpected conversation, we want to hear from you.

KZNSA is a space for artists and audiences to encounter ideas, practices and perspectives that matter. We are looking for exhibitions that respond to the present, imagine what comes next, and contribute meaningfully to the cultural life of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

What could you put on the walls?

We welcome proposals from individual artists, collectives, curators and collaborative practices across contemporary art and related fields. Proposals may take many forms, and we encourage ambitious thinking about how an exhibition might occupy, activate or transform the gallery.

Applications close: Wednesday, 14 October 2026 at 23:59

Applicants will be notified by: Monday, 30 November 2026

Exhibition spaces

There are four exhibition spaces available at KZNSA Gallery. Proposals may consider using these spaces individually or in combination.

Floor plans, elevations, gallery specifications, 2027 exhibition rates and other information to assist you in developing your proposal are included in the KZNSA Gallery 2027 Exhibition Information Pack here: Information Pack

Exhibition proposals may use the gallery space/s for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. Venue rates are applied weekly, with a once-off fee covering marketing and photography of the exhibition. Please consult the 2027 Exhibition Information Pack and Rate Sheet for full details.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Information Pack and associated exhibition costs before submitting a proposal.

Procedure for applications

KZNSA Gallery welcomes proposals for solo and group exhibitions. Artists and curators are encouraged to apply, as are collectives, galleries, arts organisations and other art institutions.

All proposals must be submitted through the KZNSA Gallery 2027 Exhibition Proposal online application form. Access the online form here: Exhibition Proposals Form

Applicants will be asked to provide information including:

  • Exhibition title
  • Exhibition framework, including a description, motivation, theme and/or intention
  • Artist biography/biographies
  • Artist CV(s)
  • Supporting images of artworks, with relevant artwork information
  • Website, portfolio and/or social media links, where available
  • Preferred exhibition space(s) and exhibition period
  • Any relevant technical or installation information

Applicants proposing more than one artist are encouraged to compile participating artists’ CVs into one clearly labelled document where required.

Applicants are also welcome to provide links to artists’ websites, portfolios, social media profiles or other relevant online platforms that may assist the Exhibitions Subcommittee in reviewing the work.

Review and selection

Following the closing date, applications will undergo an administrative review before being submitted to the KZNSA Exhibitions Subcommittee for evaluation.

If your proposal is selected, the Exhibitions Subcommittee will try to accommodate your preferred exhibition date and space. Due to the number of applications received and the requirements of the overall exhibition programme, KZNSA may not be able to accommodate every applicant’s preferred dates or spaces. Where this is the case, alternative gallery space(s) and/or exhibition date(s) may be proposed, which applicants are welcome to accept or decline.

Proposals submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed.

The Exhibitions Subcommittee’s decision is based on a majority vote and is final. Feedback regarding the acceptance or rejection of individual proposals is provided at the Director’s discretion.

Should your exhibition proposal be successful, an exhibition agreement between you and KZNSA Gallery will be prepared and sent to you for review and signature.

Before applying

  • An Information Pack has been compiled to assist applicants in preparing their proposals. It contains important information about the gallery spaces, exhibition rates, application requirements and other practical considerations. We strongly encourage applicants to read the Information Pack before completing the application form.
  • Applications close: 14 October 2026 at 23:59
