Sabelo Mlangeni | Honeymoon. The happily ever after? – Upcoming Public Programmes
Date
Exhibition: 2 October – 1 November 2026
Venue: KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, Durban
KZNSA Gallery invites audiences to engage further with Sabelo Mlangeni’s exhibition, Honeymoon. The happily ever after?, through two upcoming public programmes.
Developed over five years and inspired by Mlangeni’s honeymoon trip to eThekwini, the exhibition offers an intimate portrait of the city in all its glamour and decay. Through photographs of everyday encounters, moments of leisure and landscapes shaped by the 2021 unrest and 2022 floods, Mlangeni reflects on the contradictions of life in post-apartheid South Africa.
First presented at blank projects in Cape Town in 2025, the exhibition now returns to the city that inspired it, inviting audiences to reflect on how people continue to live, love and find joy amidst complex social and political realities.
Upcoming Public Programmes
Artist-led Walkabout with Sabelo Mlangeni
Saturday, 24 October 2026 | 13h00
Join Sabelo Mlangeni for a guided walkabout of the exhibition, offering an opportunity to hear directly from the artist about his photographic practice, encounters with eThekwini and the ideas informing the series.
Closing Talk: Gqom as Visual Culture: Black Life, Sound and the City
Saturday, 31 October 2026 | 13h00
Join artist Sabelo Mlangeni in conversation with curator and researcher Kabelo Malatsie as they reflect on Honeymoon. The happily ever after? and its exploration of life in eThekwini.
Drawing on Malatsie’s research and curatorial interests in contemporary African art and cultural production, the conversation will consider gqom as a point of departure for exploring Black urban life, sound and visual culture. Together, they will reflect on how the city is experienced, represented and imagined, extending the questions of place, identity and everyday life emerging from Mlangeni’s photographs.
Both programmes invite audiences to spend time with the photographs, engage in dialogue and reflect on the social and cultural realities that shape contemporary life in Durban.
