Parking des Anges: A Saisons France 2012-2013 South Africa Project
Reflecting on the process
Car guards: seen, unseen, noticed not noted an omnipotent presence deemed necessary but never engaged. A hand stuck through a car window gingerly dropping a coin into expectant hands…or not.
‘Parking des Anges’ brings together 6 car guards from the DRC, Burundi, South Africa in conversation with artists from South Africa and France to synthesize, their histories, ‘street smarts’, insight and lived realities into creative possibilities. The journey at once harrowing, exhilarating, innovative and contemplative gradually evolves into the transformation of their gilets (waist coats) - the uniform, the façade, the symbol into a tableaux that will reflect and engage identity, xenophobia, the city as home.
Enter two French dancers who will take their cue from the animated, gesticulating, signing of the guards, movement of necessity into creative flow.
Over the past 2 weeks , the reputable French dance company exnihilo has been conducting a workshop with the car guards. They also engaged strategic spots along pavements of Durban. These creative interventions emerged from the cracks of urbanity, dancing form drawing from the car guards, their movements transfigured, the dance speaking for the silent.
