KZNSA is pleased to present Somewhere In Between, an exhibition of new work from South African born artist Jennifer Morrison.

In this series of paintings, Morrison uses the formal qualities of colour and composition to allude to something experienced in the world and also within oneself.

She endeavours to create a space within these works, inviting an awareness of unfolding as the final marks sit on top of a series of previous marks. The works evoke a sense of a past; of something that lies behind what is seen and felt in the present.

For Morrison, painting is expression. It captures an interior world and a personal response to the external world around one. It’s about having faith in not knowing. It is about what is unspoken.

Morrison is interested in the literalness of painting. Subject matter, for her, is the least interesting aspect of art. She is far more interested in how a painting is put together; in its visual impact. Paintings are there to be experienced.

The paintings embody entanglement, hope and struggle.

They are about trying to capture a moment, a memory, an emotion that is in a state of flux, as all things are.

Morrison sees her paintings as arrangements that evoke and describe states of chaos, struggle and aggression alongside those of rest and beauty.
