‘What Lies Beneath’

Paintings, Prints and drawings By Faye Spencer, Kristin Hua Yang and Colbert Mashile.

Faye Spencer, Kristin Hua Yang, and Colbert Mashile work at the Centre for Visual Art at University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg. Their connection to the centre, and their teaching practice, has drawn them together as colleagues and friends whose work shares a common interest in the human connection.

All three artists work across the disciplines of painting, drawing and print. Integral to their practice is a concern with the notion of dialogue, and in the space artists create for speaking about - and reflecting on - dilemmas and experiences of the present. While each work quite differently in the mediums of their choice, shared core questions lie beneath the practice of Spencer, Yang and Mashile.  These are: What are we doing here? How do we learn more about the world we occupy? How do we make this an emancipatory practice? How best do we connect our learning to the learning of others?

The answers to such questions are explored through the practices of painting, drawing and print that these three artists pursue.
