Messages for Mandela Exhibit featured at KZNSA to raise funds & awareness for children in rural South Africa.

  • 27 October 2014 - 15 November 2014

Durban-based non-profit KZNSA will partner with Thanda – a non-profit organisation that provides support & education for children in rural KZN through after-school programmes – to feature a contemporary photograph collection produced by local artist Clint Styrdom called Messages for Mandela.

A few months ago, Thanda students were asked to write letters to Mandela. What resulted was a heartfelt outpouring of love and appreciation for a man they affectionately call “Tata Mandela.” They wrote of their understanding of the sacrifices he made and of their deep gratitude for freedom. They told the story of a man who will never be lost, and they showed a story of hope for the future.

Strydom brought these letters to life through photographs of the children themselves. Their smiles portray a new Africa – a hopeful Africa – where children have pride in themselves and goals for the future. It is the Africa that Thanda works to create every day and funds from these photos will benefit Thanda’s work with children in rural South Africa. â€¨

The Messages for Mandela exhibit launched at the annual Witness Hilton Arts Festival in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, 19 September. Following the event, the exhibit will move to KZNSA where it will be featured as part of their temporary collection from 28 October to 16 November 2014. In celebration of the exhibit’s new home at KZNSA, the organisations will be hosting a launch party in October 2014.

Prints, posters, and the Messages for Mandela desk calendars will be available for sale in the KZNSA gift shop throughout the exhibition. The desk calendar makes for a classic yet contemporary gift for men, coworkers, and friends. Please see photo of the calendar attached.

Messages for Mandela will subsequently be featured at Buzz Art, KZNSA’s pop-up shop from 18 November to 15 January. Buzz Art is KZN’s premier holiday shopping destination and Messages for Mandela prints, posters, and calendars will be available throughout Buzz Art.
