It seems that the Chinese authorities have, to use a their own frightening euphemism, dissappeared Ai Weiwei. He is one of the most important international artists, but in spite of his reputation and significance, he is constantly harassed in China. It would have appear that the Chinese authorities may have decided to silence him forever.

As the new global superpower, China still feels they can act with impunity when it comes to stamping on  human rights, free speech and artistic freedom.
