Disruption and expectations
Disruption and memory
Disruption and history
Disruption and continuity
Disruption and consciousness
A feminist perspective:
“Like desire, language disrupts, refuses to be contained within boundaries. It speaks itself against our will, in words and thoughts that intrude, even violate the most private spaces of mind and body.” (bell hooks, 1994: 167)
A literary perspective:
“At the end of it all […] I was able to witness in a very light manner the heavy dramas of disruption and continuity in history; of disconnection, reconnections or new connections; of limitations in choice, followed by moments of plenitude and sometimes confusing, even disempowering choice. As if that was not enough, there was one more hurdle to jump: anguish from the resonances of implication.” (Njabulo Ndebele, opening address at the launch of the Cambridge History of South African Literature, UCT)
