GRTX X PLTR STUDIO PING-PONG

Date
Studio Ping-Pong is the consequence of a month-long collaboration between Georgina Gratrix and Cameron Platter. Taking place in Platter’s studio during the World Ping-Pong Championship hosted in Durban in May 2023, the title of the exhibition points to the ethic of sharing ideas as they ping-pong back and forth in the studio, from artist to artist.
The show can be seen as the conversation occurring between Gratrix and Platter’s own distinctive styles where the resulting works reveal the process of their collaborative effort. Meeting halfway between “planning and execution” on the one hand, and “freestyle jazz” on the other, the show presents multi-media works that include ceramics and painting.
Central to both media is the playfulness inherent in each artist’s approach to subject and form. In the paintings, vast and colourful interiors provide the backdrop for an alternate universe that extends beyond the canvas, as it comes to life in the ceramics. Conversely, the contents of the studio space, and its process driven dialogue, can be heard in the echoes between painting and sculpture.
