Khanya Apelgren

Council member

Khanya Apelgren is an emerging creative professional whose life is shaped by the power of the arts to inspire, connect, and transform. She first found her voice as a child in Wentworth, dancing with the Jae Dance Academy. This community initiative was proof that access to the arts nurtures confidence, identity, and belonging. That lesson continues to guide her, and she remains connected to the community through the work of the Margaret Apelgren Foundation.

Khanya’s artistic path has taken her across borders. As a student in eSwatini, she represented her school at an international competition in Singapore and in a production staged at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. Such opportunities taught her how creativity thrives in dialogue with others, and how cultural exchange can break down barriers and expand worldviews.

Khanya began her tertiary studies at St. Olaf College in the United States, majoring in Dance and Political Science, before deciding to bring her focus home to Africa. At the University of Cape Town, she earned a degree in Politics & Governance, African Studies, and Film & Television Studies, grounding her creative work in history, politics, and the complexity of identity.

Professionally, she has combined this knowledge with practical experience. Work-shadowing at the City of Durban’s Department of International Relations exposed her to diplomacy and the role of culture in governance. Through the Margaret Apelgren Foundation, she is advancing community-building projects, including developing a documentary on the overlooked contributions of Coloured women in the anti- apartheid struggle and hosting a Brazilian capoeira group in Durban as part of a cultural exchange.

As a teaching assistant, drama instructor, and student leader, Khanya has supported youth to build their confidence and creativity. She believes that nurturing young voices is essential for a vibrant and sustainable arts sector.

Khanya brings a unique combination of lived experience, global perspective, and grassroots connection. She is passionate about creating inclusive spaces, amplifying diverse voices, and building bridges between communities through the arts.
