Robin Moodley is a Durban-based artist who trained in fine art at the University of Durban Westville (UDW), starting in 1979. He had to interrupt his studies due to lack of finance and worked at Mobil Refinery from 1980-1984 as a process technician. While working shifts at Mobil, Moodley registered to continue his fine art course 1984 – 1986. He had to leave UDW due to his political activism and applied for special permission to complete his final year majoring in painting and drawing at Natal Technikon in 1987 and 1988. Moodley’s first exhibition after graduating was a two-person show with Jenny Parsons at the then Natal Society for the Arts Gallery in Overport City in 1989. He then worked with homeless children as a skills coordinator with the Clermont NGO, Streetwise for five years. After that he worked independently as a furniture designer. Moodley established an interior design practice, which he ran for 25 years. During this time, the passion to create art grew and Robin acquired the diverse skills required to execute large-scale projects. He spent years conceptualising the work he always desired to produce.
